1. Chain cleaning

1.1 Why the chain should be clean

Friction is constantly generated between the chain and the sprocket during driving, as well as between the chain links. This loosens fine metal abrasion and inevitably dirties the chain. Together with the residues of chain lubricants, sand, road dirt, etc., a stubborn coating forms on the chain and sprocket. This coating prevents the active ingredients of a chain spray from creeping deep between the chain links – lubrication becomes impossible. So if you never or rarely clean the chain, the lubrication of the chain becomes increasingly ineffective. The spinning off of chain grease increases because the lubricant can no longer creep between the chain links, but remains on the surface. So for it to “run” optimally, it is not enough to lubricate the chain from time to time. A chain is only properly maintained if it is thoroughly cleaned on a regular basis.

1.2 What to use to keep the chain clean

Thanks to its special formulation, S100 Chain Cleaner combines optimal creeping ability with perfect adhesion. This allows cleaning power to take full effect, stubborn dirt is dealt with – automatically, without long scrubbing. The cleaner is also absolutely compatible with the material – increasing smooth running properties and protecting against wear.

2. Protecting the chain from wear

2.1 How to extend a chain’s life

Strong forces act on a motorcycle chain. The constant friction that occurs between chain and sprocket, but also between the individual chain links, is minimised by lubrication with chain sprays. However, a chain spray only does this if it is applied regularly and sufficiently and has a strong adhesion to the surface. Insufficient lubrication quickly leads to signs of wear such as elongation of the chain (it sags and needs to be retightened) or visible wear marks on the sprocket.
It is worthwhile to avoid this. Because a regularly maintained chain set has a much higher mileage and does not need to be replaced prematurely. A well-maintained chain contributes to safety when riding a motorcycle.

2.2 How to protect it

S100 White Chain Spray is virtually spin-free for a clean rear rim.

  • Excellent creeping ability for longer chain set mileage.
  • Longer lubrication intervals.
  • Best corrosion protection, protects effectively against rust.
  • Optimum lubricating properties from -30°C to +110°C.
  • Excellent wash-off resistance (rain rides, motorcycle washes).
  • Contains PTFE. Maintains O/X/Z rings and keeps them flexible.

3. Tips for chain care

  • Relubricate the motorcycle chain every 500 to 1,000 km.
  • Clean the chain before lubrication at least every 2,000 km, ideally before each lubrication.
  • Make sure that you only use cleaners that guarantee O-/X- or Z-ring compatibility for chain cleaning.
  • Always spray the chain spray thinly and evenly and then allow it to flash off well – overnight is ideal.
