1. Background information

A clean windscreen is an important safety factor when driving. Especially at night, in the rain and against the light, dirty windscreens considerably obstruct visibility. The journey easily becomes a blind flight and the risk of an accident increases. You are certainly familiar with the smear and glare films that sometimes form when you operate the windscreen wipers in sudden rain. These glare films also severely restrict visibility.

What is too easy to forget – not only the outer glass gets dirty. Dust and other particles also gradually settle on the inside. It is often only in unfavourable light conditions – such as at night due to headlights from oncoming traffic – when you notice how this dirt also causes a definite restriction in visibility.

With cleaning agents that are matched to the soiling of car windscreens, it is very easy to have a clear and therefore safe view of the road at all times. Because in addition to the pure safety aspect, it is a legal requirement:

  • StVO (German Road Traffic Act) § 23 Para. 1: The driver of the vehicle is responsible for ensuring that his vision and hearing are not impaired by ... the condition of the vehicle.
  • StVO (German Road Traffic Act) § 2 Para. 3a: In the case of motor vehicles, the equipment must be adapted to the weather conditions ...

2.1 Glare and smudging on the windscreen

Dirt on the outer windscreen should not be underestimated. Besides insect remains and dust, silicone, wax and diesel soot also settle there. The windscreen wipers and water alone usually only remove part of this layer of dirt. What remains is a milky, water-repellent layer: the classic glare or smear film. It scatters the light of oncoming vehicles so intensely that you drive as if “blind”.

2.2 How to clean windscreens correctly?

2.2.1 Choosing the right product

When choosing the right windscreen cleaner for the windscreen washer system, the most important thing is to clear the windscreen quickly. The cleaner must remove dangerous glare and smear films from insect residues, dust, silicone, wax and diesel soot right away. Besides this, it must be ensured that the product does not clog the windscreen washer nozzles and does not form deposits in the washer reservoir.

Modern materials place more extreme demands on cleaning products. Headlight lenses, for example, are now made of plastic, not glass. Unsuitable cleaners cause stress cracks in these plastic lenses. These are irreparable and the lens must be replaced (in some headlamps, the lens cannot be replaced). In this case, the entire headlamp must be replaced). To prevent this from happening, you should treat yourself to a special product.

Please note: Rinsing agent, spirit & Co. are not suitable for the care of car windows and headlights, neither in terms of cleaning performance nor in terms of material compatibility!

2.3 Advantages of high concentrate or ready mixed

Advantages of high concentrate:

  • If you convert the cleaning liquid obtained from a bottle of high concentrate to the price per litre, high concentrates are significantly cheaper.
  • They are much more space-saving and can therefore be refilled on the go at any time.
  • Last but not least, they are more environmentally friendly, as there is significantly less packaging waste.

Advantages of ready mixed:

  • The sometimes complicated mixing with water is no longer necessary.
  • Convenient and uncomplicated to use.
  • The mixing ratio is perfectly adjusted.

2.4 Winter application

The conventional mixtures of antifreeze and windscreen cleaner have too low a proportion of cleaning agent. As a result, the cleaning performance is simply too weak. Especially in winter, when you have to deal with road salt as well as the usual dirt, this creates glare and smear films that severely impair visibility.
A mixture of antifreeze and a high-quality windscreen cleaning concentrate ensures lightning-fast, safe vision in winter.

Tip:
Always observe the mixing sequence: 1. Antifreeze, 2. Water, 3. CW1:100 Super Windshield Cleaner or CW1:100 Classic Windshield Cleaner.
If you do not keep to the order, precipitation could occur.

3. Care of headlights and mirrors

When it comes to headlights, it’s not just about providing optimum illumination, but also about being seen. In winter, a thick layer of dirt and road salt quickly settles on the headlights. In summer, it is insects that are a stubborn source of dirt and considerably impair the luminosity of the headlights. The exterior mirrors must also ensure a perfectly clear view to the rear at all times. If this is forgotten, visibility is poor and the risk of accidents increases. This is easy to avoid if mirrors and headlights are regularly maintained with the right cleaners.

3.1 Headlights

3.1.1 Choosing the right product

Most car headlights today are no longer made of glass, but of so-called plastic lenses. This also means increased demands on the material compatibility of modern cleaning products. Unsuitable cleaners cause stress cracks on plastic lenses. They are irreparable and the headlamp must be replaced.

The professional solution is cleaning agents such as:
